Relatives, mine and other people's

Yesterday, I went to a Labor Day party at my mother's cousin Barbara's house. We took Yasu (not sure on the spelling), who works for the same company as Tom and just came over from Japan this week, with us. He's staying at mom's house until his furniture is delivered. My mother, in typical my-mother style, took me aside and said something along the lines of "I told him you like computers, and he likes computers, so make sure he has someone to talk to". Right. I "like computers". I've spent the last 4-5 years of my academic career studying theoretical stuff having to do with computers. I have not, however, kept up with the latest brand names or specific products in computers, because I've been busy with school and broke. This made me a stunningly good source of information on topics such as which brand of WiFi router to get, cable vs. DSL in terms of his specific area, and other such things. Ah well. I did my best, and he didn't seem to have any trouble finding people to talk to anyway.

The party went pretty well other than that. Not much I liked in the way of food, but that's pretty typical. I was stuck drinking Black Butte Porter, which I'm getting a bit sick of but is at least dark beer, so things could have been worse in that regard too. They have a nice dog.

Today, I spent time with clipdude, and his family. One of his cousins, Vivian, was up from Sacramento, so I got to meet her. We went to Multnomah Falls, which was way too fucking crowded for my tastes. Then there was some confusion as to whether Vivian was supposed to meet her friends in Sellwood or Sherwood, which are not, of course, anywhere near each other. However, her directions involved something vague like "take 99" (there are 99s, and 99E works to get partway to Sellwood, and 99W gets you right to Sherwood). Eventually, we got her there (Sherwood, as it turned out).

Then, I got to come home. Now, I need to sleep so I can go to work in the morning. Whee. This entry was going to be more complicated, but dad came in in the middle and wanted to eat ice cream.
